New Balance Men's MX626 Slip Resistant Cross-Training Shoe,Black,9.5 4E US Review

Maybe I'll be updating this review in six months after wearing these shoes for awhile. But I wanted to give a review because of what I find significant about this particular model of the New Balance 620 series upon opening the box and trying on the shoes.

I've been wearing New Balance 620s for many years. Currently, I have a pair of 622s that need replacement. I saw the latest model was 626 on Amazon. The fact that it is promoted as having some new "slip resistant" feature was unimportant to me. I never regarding my other 620s as having a problem with "slipping."

In any event, these 626 are significantly lighter! I noticed this immediately upon taking the shoes out of the box. I weighed the new 626 and the old 622. The 626 weighs 12 oz. a shoe. My current 622s weigh about 13.75 oz each shoe (my scale is a postal balance scale and is not calibrated in more than .5 ounce increments). When I put one 626 on one foot and one 622 on the other, I could feel the difference (but maybe I was tricked because I knew after weighing them that the 626 was lighter than the 622).

The exterior is shorter, too! By about a quarter of inch. The exterior width is the same. Both feel the same on the inside, any seeming tightness in the new 626 will surely work out over time. Indeed, they have a removal insole. When the insole is taken out, they are extremely comfortable. I put in its place arch supports that I wear in all my shoes and they fit---to coin a phrase---like a glove.

As the photos show on the website, the pattern of the soles is also significantly different on the 626 from other 620s. More like street shoes than athletic shoes. Maybe these shoes are designed not so much for "cross-training" or athletics, as much as there are for working in areas with a lot of grease and oil.

Whether any of this will have long term effects on the shoe in terms of durability and long term comfort, I don't know. Stay tuned for an update. I've worn some 620s for up to three years; others less.

I gave the shoe four stars for the reason that when I put in five stars, the phrase "I love it" popped up. I have difficulty saying I love an inanimate object such as clothes, food, a car, etc. "Like" gets the point across very well.

I also gave it four stars for another reason that maybe New Balance will take notice of. Like a lot of other people, I started to buy New Balance because at the time they were the only athletic shoe made in the US. Sadly, that's not the case anymore. The 626's are made in Indonesia. While the Indonesians need to eat, too, we really have no assurance of the working conditions in the factories, or environmental issues in the manufacturing process. New Balance and other manufacturers, please take note.
