ORIGINAL REVIEW:
_____________________________________________________
Thoughts:
First off, all that i was looking for in a heart monitor was the ability to see my heart rate, see if i'm in the zone, and see how many calories i have burned. This watch does all of those functions flawlessly! My family has a history of heart related problems so when i workout, i need to make sure that i am not putting too much stress on my heart while still maintaining a high level of work. I use this primarily during cardio routines of P90X but i will use this more for running once it gets warm outside.

Functionality/Use:
The watch is incredibly easy to use. When you first open the box, you go through a setup wizard on the watch asking you to input information such a weight, gender, and units preferences to better tailor the results to the individual. After that, you are literally all set to workout. While many people have had trouble getting the watch to pick up the signal from the strap, i have found that licking or wetting the strap works wonders!
Something else that i would like to point out is that the watch have the ability to **beep** when you're out of your zone (either not working hard enough or working way harder than you should be) that is priceless! I have found sometimes during my workouts that i'm pushing myself really hard and i end up getting my heart rate above 185 BPM which is not really the best thing to do. This **beep** is great for some workouts but terrible for others. Luckily, you can turn the **beep** off very easily. I prefer to turn the beep off if i'm going to do interval training like sprints or something where my BPM is not always in the zone.

Other:
Just a few quick things i would like to point out. I've read online that detaching the heart rate pod from the strap will make the battery last longer. I am not sure this actually does anything, but it gives me ease of mind thinking that i am actually making it last longer.

Pros:
Lightweight
Comfortable
Easy to use
**Beep** while outside of the "zone" is a great feature that can be turned on/off
Cons:
None

Overall:
Overall, i can't think of a better watch to spend my money on. No, this doesn't give graphs on how you're doing over time but that is not what I was looking for. This is a great buy and i have used it for a good period of time and have had no issues at all with it.

UPDATE #1: AFTER 2 MONTHS
_____________________________________________________

After two months, this watch is still working perfectly! I have had no issues and i love that i have the ability to look at combined totals of my workouts! As of today, i have burned over 35,000 calories!!! This feature is something that keeps you motivated to keep working hard. Before this watch, i never was that into working out. Now when i run, instead of going a certain distance, i like to aim for a caloric goal (about 1,000) before i end my workout.

I still highly recommend this watch to anyone looking for a great heart monitor!

UPDATE #2: April 4th, 2013
_____________________________________________________
I just started the Insanity workout series today and this watch comes in handy! I am able to see if I am over/underworking so that i can obtain my goals. Something i wanted to throw out there was cleaning this unit. I know that sweating all over something causes bacteria to grow and i also noticed after a while, salt (from my sweat) would build up on the chest strap.

I clean it like so;

CLEANING:
-Watch
~Wipe down with a Clorox Bleach Wipe
~Soak in some hot water for a few seconds
~Dry
~Strap
~Wipe down with a Clorox Bleach Wipe
~Place in the washing machine on A VERY GENTLE SETTINGS
~Allow to air-dry
~HRM Pod

New Balance Women's WX608V3 Cross-Training Shoe,White/Navy,5.5 D US Review

I have problem feet, and practically no shoes are comfortable to me. The wide width option on these shoes is plenty wide enough for me to wear with fluffy socks, and the shoes offer enough support and spring so that I can be on my feet all day doing dirty work in the yard without getting pain or fatigue. The shoes last virtually forever and the leather (not suede) washes up really nice in the washing machine. Love these. I have three pairs.

New Balance Women's WX608V3 Cross-Training Shoe,White/Pink,7.5 2A US Review

I've been wearing New Balance for years. They are the only shoe I've found that work for my feet, being at a hospital for 12 hour shifts. I loved the look of these too, mostly white (required fro school) and no mesh across the toes (a must for me working in a hospital). However, these do NOT fit like my others do! They felt too narrow and I could actually feel the seaming on the inside rubbing against my instep...ouch! I had to return these, which was quick and painless, fortunately. I'll have to go to a brick and morter store to find my next pair so I can actually try them on this time.

The Grid 2.0 is an indespensible exercise and massage therapy tool that you'll want to include in all of your pre-and post-workout regimens.

Trigger Point Performance Grid 2.0 Revolutionary EVA Foam Roller (Black) Review

I am a physical therapist and I first tried this product at a professional conference. My husband is a personal trainer and had used the traditional foam roller with client and himself for years until we got this one.
I like it because:
-- It is firmer than a basic white foam roller, allowing you to use more pressure and work out deep knots or tension better.
(Note: you can easily change the angle at which you use it to keep pressure light.)
-- It holds its shape. The basic foam rollers will dent in and break down with use, this product will retain its shape and thus will not need to be replaced.

After a successful home use trial, I also had two purchased for the clinic where I work. This is a solid product and I highly recommend it.

ASICS Men's GEL-Nimbus 14 Running Shoe,Black/Digital/Neon Orange,8.5 M US Review

New for 2012, this is the 14th iteration of one of Asics flagship models.

Overview: The latest version in the lineage remains true to its predecessors. If you liked the Nimbus in the past, you will like this one too. While Asics claims to have made a significant number of changes to the new model, most are superficial. The primary differences are:

(1) a slightly narrower profile (meaning the soul does not flair out as much), though the toe box retains about the same interior width for your toes;

(2) weight has been reduced by about 4 ounces per pair, while cushioning remains as good as ever; and

(3) flashier colors have been added to suggest a more premium line.

In addition to the more subtle blue/black version, the original release includes two jazzier color combinations: a neon yellow / blue and a black / "digital neon." (If past models are any indication, more color combinations through the year.)

Brief Background: I am 6'1", 175, and run three to seven miles several days a week - primarily on city streets and paved running trails, sometimes on the treadmill. Once or twice a year I will train up to the half-marathon to full-marathon level for a short window, but running is generally part of my cross training program. The Nimbus 14s are probably my 7th or 8th version to run in of the Nimbus line. (I also periodically buy a set of Kayanos, but prefer the Nimbus for their slightly higher level of cushioning.)

About Asics: For years Asics has had two popular models: the Kayano (now on its 18th iteration) and the Nimbus. These were the models that first regularly broke the $100 per pair mark. Now, so many iterations later, they are retailing for $140 - $150 per pair. To up the ante Asics has added additional designs such as the super premium Kinsei line that is $180+ and the Cirrus, a line aimed at people moving towards a flatter soul (read: natural running a la the 5 Fingers crowd). (Beginning with the last iteration, 13, the Nimbus was already beginning to lower its heal, so the line is keeping pace with evolving trends, but at a more subdued rate.) While I can't speak to the Cirrus line, I have looked at the Kensei line. Though others may disagree, the Kensei strikes me as a Kayano rapped in techno lizard skin. Not that I don't like techno lizard skin, it just appears they are more flash than "superior engineering," regardless of price differential. For most runners, the Kayano and Nimbus will likely retain their place as the real workhorses in the stable for training or exercise.

The Nimbus: For anyone new to Asics or the Nimbus line in particular, the shoe is particularly well-suited for those with a "neutral" gate and slightly higher arches - there is greater cushioning for the arches. If you are a high-mileage runner (running 25 miles or more a week) optimizing for comfort over absolute speed, this is an excellent shoe to train in to avoid injuries. Running on a treadmill or anything short of hard cement and you will feel like you are running on soft earth.

Number 14: With respect to the specific changes for 2012:

(1) The weight loss is noticeable. The new shoes feel slightly lighter. It is more evident in the hand than on the foot, but the slight reduction in weight will certainly feel better in those last miles. They also seem slightly airier. This may not be good in the cold, but for running in warm weather it is a plus.

(2) The shoe retains its stability and cushioning. This remains the shoe's strong suit. One of the advantages of their continued lowering is increased sure-footedness. They are stable to run in, such that you can run on fairly uneven surfaces or have a surprise change in elevation and still not turn your ankle - ie, you don't feel like you are running on a platform as was the case in the earlier models. At the same time, they continue to retain a good deal of cushioning. I have run in the 5 Fingers and the minimus shoe line by New Balance (which are great to throw in a suitcase when you have limited room and may only be hitting a treadmill). They feel good for short distances or on soft ground, but for longer stretches or pavement, still strongly prefer something with some cushion and that is where the Nimbus still stands apart.

(3) The Nimbus is getting more flash. While they are still offering some regular color schemes, they are finally adding some glitz to the line. The Kayano typically got a good color scheme or two while the Nimbus was still a little on the dull side. Look out. The Nimbus is starting to make tracks and can now stand toe-to-toe with the latest Nikes. And at this price point, it's long overdue.

A few general notes: (a) if you are new to Asics, most people order one size larger than their street shoes - ie, if you wear a 10 in regular shoes, you may need to order an 11 and (b) like a toothbrush, they need to be replaced more than you might think. As much as I dislike buying a couple of pair of these a few times a year, every time I try to cheap out and go too long on replacing shoes, I spend some time nursing a shin splint or IT band injury.

As aside and likely one that will continue to remain without remedy because no one at the design studio or factory seems to listen or care, the insoles are still p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c. If you are going to put lots of miles on these, you might consider an aftermarket insole. I like the superfeet, but there are many that work well depending on your running style, arches, foot volume, etc. A trip to a running store may be well worth it on this front. As almost all running shoes suffer from this issue (the paper mache insole), I am not deducting a star for this. (If half a star could be reduced, I would.)

In sum, the new model is same as the old one, only a little better, specifically: lighter and jazzier while retaining the right balance of cushioning for a regular runner. This continues to be an excellent overall shoe for running.

Hope this review helps you.

Product Description

The kettlebell has long been a favorite for those seeking a special edge in strength and endurance. Kettlebell training develops strength, power, endurance and balance. Working out with kettlebells will sculpt and tone the entire body because lifting and controlling a kettlebell forces the entire body, and specifically the core, to contract as a group, building both strength and stability at the same time. Kettlebell workouts engage multiple muscle groups at once. They are a great option for getting a whole body workout in a short time. Made of solid cast iron, these kettlebells are both versatile and durable. CAP Barbell 45 -Pounds Kettlebell Review

I looked around at the local sporting good stores for the right kettlebell to purchase, so I would have a resistance option at home in between my infrequent visits to the gym. I eventually decided to go with the CAP 35 pounder because from reviews, I had built up a preference for the smoother bells over the rougher ones. The CAP kettlebell is very smooth and the handle is very comfortable to hold. There are no rough edges or burrs to cut up your hands as you do the various movements. Most experts indicated that you would normally start at a weight of 35 pounds for a man...however, I'm not the man I thought I was because I probably would have been better off with a lighter weight...being an out of shape 62 year-old. However, that's not the fault of the product. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone that prefers smooth over rough.

New Balance Men's MX608V3 Cross-Training Shoe,Black,7.5 2E US Review

I've been wearing the 608's for years... The first pair I purchased fit me well and I became a fan of the shoe... Then the V2 came out Wow! was that a step down... I just received my first and unfortunately my last pair of the new V3's! The quality has tanked the "toe box" has been significantly reduced which means a size 12 4E no longer fits and I would have to go to a 12.5 to get "justice" for my toes...(it turns out another prior reviewer stated this in his/her review however I didn't catch that until after I had ordered) I get the feeling that New Balance has let the bean counters take over their management as they seem more interested in squeezing every penny they can out of their manufacturing costs... Unfortunately that comes at the expense of product quality in terms of fit and finish... and that has cost them 1 long term customer...

Nutramax Cosequin DS Double-Strength Chewable Tablets - 250 Count Review

February 8, 2006: We were considering hip replacement surgery for our 90 lb lab who was diagnosed with hip dysplaysia. Our vet recommended we try Cosequin DS first. We had tried similar products with no improvement and didn't expect this to work either. We were wrong. There was a marked difference in our lab's activity level within the first two weeks. Currently, he plays runs, and jumps with no pain. This product worked wonders for our dog.

UPDATE June 18, 2007: Cosequin did work wonders for our lab, but he also has Degenerative Myelopathy which was missed due to the hip dysplasia. We had never heard of this disease and didn't know the signs or symptoms to watch for. Please, if your dog is on a joint therapy product, search for Degenerative Myelopathy on the internet and familiarize yourself with the symptoms. As the disease progresses without treatment, your dog's chance for recovery and/or stabilization become less and less. The University of Florida has a lot of information on their website regarding this disease and a video depicting dogs in various stages of this disease.

Polar Ft7 Men's Heart Rate Monitor (Black/Red) Review

Before settling on the Polar FT7 Heart Rate Monitor, I did a lot of research on the various types of HRM out there. I was looking for a HRM that wouldn't just give me my heart rate, but I also wanted a bit more features, but I didn't need a lot of features that the higher numbered FT models offered.

When I saw the FT7 model, I was surprised to see so little reviews or mentions of this model. I'm not sure why, maybe this is a newer model or Polar just prefers directing people to the more expensive models because I kept seeing numerous reviews for the F6 or F7, FT40, and FT60 models.

After comparing various Polar HRMs, I settled for the FT7 because it had all the features that I was looking for in a HRM.

Watch/HRM

- Monitors heart rates. I found the monitoring to be accurate except underwater. (I'll go into detail about that a bit later.)
- Counts Calories. The Calorie counter seems to be quite accurate. I have used it for walking, spinning classes, swimming, and strength training sessions and the calorie counts are reasonable.
- Target heart rate graph. The graph is useful for seeing where you are and if you're within your minimum and maximum HR "fitness" ranges during a session.
- Very user friendly. Even though there aren't any instructions on setting up the watch, I didn't think they were needed. I didn't even bother looking at the manual until I was done configuring the watch, but I've never been one to read manuals. However, others may find the lack of a detailed manual a bit frustrating.
- Stores Training Files. Which include records of session durations, calories burned, average HR, Maximum HR, and the amount of time your workout HR was spent in the target range.
- Weekly Summaries. This basically sums up the total amount of time spent training, the total calories during each session, and how many sessions during the week.
- Settings are very easy to change especially if you have any weight changes and want to keep an accurate count of calories being burned.
- There is also a backlight, which is quite handy if you're somewhere with minimal lighting.
- I also found out that if you hold the "down arrow" button, you can change the time to a second time zone that you can set by going through the "quick menu" which is accessed by holding down the "backlight button (*)" which also leads to the "button lock" feature. If you hold down the "up arrow" button, you can change the "Watch face" to just display the time and date or the time and date and logo, which is smaller on the face, but it includes seconds and FT7 logo along the bottom.
- The women's watch is black with a gold stripe down the center of the band. I found the design to be all right. It is less flashy and colorful as the other models, which is one reason I like this watch. I can wear it with my work clothes and it does not stand out much.
- User changeable batteries. This was something I really wanted out of my HRM. I never liked sending something to the manufacturer for replacements even under warranty. I just don't like dealing with shipping, waiting, and extra fees.
- Water Resistant. I have used this HRM in the pool and the monitoring is relatively accurate when it actually reads the transmitter. I believe the Polar website notes that in some highly chlorinated pools or seawater the transmitter will not be picked up underwater. The pool in my gym is very chlorinated and there were times when the HRM will not pick up my heart rate. But if I just sit still in the water for a minute or so the watch will pick up the signal again. Though this can get annoying if you are trying to swim laps for endurance. The watch still gives me a fair calculation of calories I have burned during my swim sessions. Though the calorie count is most likely lower since I'm not sure how long the watch is not reading my heart rate during times when I am swimming several laps nonstop. I also tried using this in a saltwater treated pool and the moment I went underwater the transmitter does not work at all. So I'm guessing that this HRM will not work if you are swimming in the ocean.

Chest Strap

- The Chest strap is very comfortable, and I usually don't feel it, but then again it might be because I'm used to having something strapped around my chest all day. And I have had no problems of it slipping. It is also recommended to wet the straps a little. I usually just wet my hands a bit and rub against the cloth area, and I'm good to go.
- User changeable batteries. The transmitter pops off easily from the strap, and like the watch, I can change my own batteries, but unfortunately the watch and transmitter use different types of batteries.
- Another perk is that most of the machines in my gym also pick up the transmitter readings, allowing me not have to keep glancing at my watch while I'm on the elliptical or cycling.

Overall, I really like this watch. For the price I paid, it was worth it and it gives me all the basic things I need to monitor my workout sessions.

If you want a simple watch that gives you fairly accurate heart rates, calorie burns, training records, and user changeable batteries the FT7 is a cheaper option to the FT40 and FT60 models.
