I received this radio as a gift a few months back. I use it for weather info & emergency calling when I'm out kayaking, and I've been pleased with the unit so far. It picks up NOAA weather radio very well on the water (in the car & house, too). I've used it a few times for non-emergency calling to other boaters over moderate distances (1-2 miles), and have had no problems either understanding them or being understood. Granted, it doesn't have the range of a higher-power mounted/powered unit with separate antenna, but it's good enough for my purposes. It's nice that it's water resistant, and is easy to use with gloves on. I also like the flexibility of using the included rechargeable battery, or regular alkaline batteries (kind of hard to use a charger in a kayak, but there's always room for a few extra AA's in the drybag). I haven't used the included headset. I found the user interface to be relatively straightforward. I took about 5 min to actually read the manual and try it out, and it was smooth sailing after that. Press the menu button to access various settings, including changing the channel or power. Press and hold the menu button to toggle between weather & VHF bands. Emergency calling (VHF channel 16) is even easier...just press the bright orange "CH 16" button, regardless of what mode you're in. That's it. Just one button. Can't understand the really negative reviews. I've used various Uniden products before, and have found them to be overpriced and underwhelming. The same goes for West Marine products. ICOM radios are definitely a step up, but so is the price tag. This Midland unit is an inexpensive, but not cheap, handheld VHF that works well. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Midland Nautico 3 Waterproof Marine Radio" are high quality item.
