Nike Skinny Knee Pads (Black/Grey/White, Small/Medium) Review

These Nike kneepads come in Left/Right designated pads for slightly better fit.

The pros:

+ Excellent materials and construction, what we expect from Nike.

+ The Left/Right specific fits held keep the patella in place better and there is an overall better fit.

+ The cushioning material holds up pretty well (not a major issue for volleyball players if you don't land on your knees a lot, but an issue for jiu jitsu students who are fighting on their knees a lot).

+ The cushioning material is exceptionally good (in terms of thickness where you need it, and impact absorption of the specific material Nike uses). There is enough cushioning, I am guessing (since I don't play volleyball) for volleyball players, certainly more cushioning than in other volleyball kneepads I have tried to use for jiu jitsu. However, there is more padding than needed for knee level fighting in jiu jitsu, unless you are on puzzle-mats instead of tatami or wrestling mats.

The negatives:

- These pads are so thick that if you are trying to pass someone's bottom halfguard, it will be very hard to slide your leg out since the pads provide a large "bump" that the other student can clamp down on.

- Nike does not offer a true Large. My knees usually take the Large size. So these are a snug fit. Not uncomfortable to wear, but hard to get on quickly before sparring starts. The fact that they are snug, doesn't prevent them from slipping during sparring (all kneepads except thinner wrestling neoprene sleeves have this issue, so it's no big deal).

- The foam material can curl up a little in the sleeve and you have to patiently worry it back in position from time to time.

A word on care. I didn't wash my kneepads every training session and got athlete's foot around my knee due to my neglect. Simply washing them after every practice takes care of this.

Why kneepads for mat sports? Wrestlers and volleyball players use kneepads to cushion the impact of landing on their knees. This is not a major issue for jiu jitsu players. However, "shearing forces" can be a real problem in terms of patella safety. One of the rare times I forgot my kneepads, I was sparring, and my jiu jitsu gi got pretty soaked from sweat, which is pretty normal. I was in someone's guard and they tried to do a scissor sweep on me. They were large, strong, and aggro, and the lower scissoring knee brought a lot of shearing force against my knee which was planted on the mat. The soaked, gravelly canvas of my gi glued my patella to the mat and I felt a horrible shearing force as my body shifted one direction while the kneecap was stuck on the mat. I felt like my patella was going to be sheared off.

If I had been wearing a kneepad or wrestler's knee sleeve, my kneecap would have been held in place. I learned my lesson. I always wear kneepads or a sleeve. Kneepads for regular practice where I can deal with a halfguard pass; sleeves for competitions where not getting hung up in someone's halfguard is more important than the extra padding provided by a full kneepad.
