Until now, I've always used the cheap ol' plastic and aluminum paddles that you normally see with rented canoes. Sure, they're tough....tough, ugly, and heavy. The orange and yellow paddles that we'd been using looked like construction zone signs in all of our photographs. So, after purchasing a new canoe this spring, I felt that it deserved an aesthetically comparable paddle. I decided to try the Sawyer Glide for several reasons:

1. $59.00 was cheap enough to avoid the anguish that comes with the first few scratches.
2. $59.00 ensured higher quality than the $12.99 model that you see at most sporting goods stores.
3. Made in America!

It arrived quickly and made a wonderful first impression. Compared with the aforementinoed $12.99 model, the Sawyer is a work of art! Smooth varnished finish, dark accent pieces, tasteful logo. Now, to the lake! I pushed off from the shore and began with a few C-strokes followed by the J-stroke. The difference was immediate and drastically different. It "feels" approximately half the weight of my old paddles. It's much more bouyant which makes it feel even lighter. It's hard to describe but it enters and exits the water much more smoothly than the old clubs I was using. The paddle stroke is much smoother and much more efficient. It took several minutes to convince myself that the reduced effort had not reduced my cruising speed. Also, you now get feedback through the shaft from each paddle stroke. Not flex but feedback. In other words, you can feel when the blade is truly perpendicular to the hull, submerged to the proper depth, and free of turbulence. The grip and shaft are very smooth and fit well in my hands (glove size large). I'm so pleased with this paddle's looks and performance that it's difficult to imagine the $120.00 versions being any better. The Sawyer would probably survive the torture of kids and rocks with flying colors. However, I want to keep its use tranquil and civilized. Thank you, Sawyer, for further refining one of my favorite pastimes.
